Webhooks are valuable tools for receiving real-time updates and data from various services and applications. They allow you to automate workflows, integrate systems, and stay up to date on important events.

Webhooks are a type of API that is driven by events instead of requests​. Whereas an API enables two-way communication between software systems driven by requests, a webhook is a lightweight API that powers one-way data sharing triggered by events​. Webhooks are sometimes referred to as “reverse APIs,” because communication is initiated by the application sending the data rather than the one receiving it​.

The application sending the data sends a POST API call containing the data to the receiving application​. The endpoint is hosted by the application receiving the data, not the application sending the data as with a request and response-based API​.

Royal Mail offers a webhook solution for receiving tracking events from carriers. The tracking data is sent to the customer’s endpoint configured in the tracking webhook setup.

Royal Mail webhook:

• allow for a 30-day policy to keep tracking a shipment
• no historical updates will be pushed back
• almost real-time updates
• trackable products:
  • Tracked Standard, Tracked High Volume, Tracked Returns
  • Special Delivery
  • International Tracked, International Tracked and Signed
